Earthtimes. org endangered species12/4/2023 The Nashville crayfish is endangered mainly because the creek where it lives has been polluted by people. Pollution can also affect wildlife and contribute to extinction. A polar bear, on the other hand, would not live in a desert, because it could not find enough food and water. A cactus, for example, needs the sunny, dry desert in order to grow. Every species requires a certain habitat in order to live. The United States has many habitats, from ocean beaches to mountain tops. A habitat includes not only the other plants and animals in an area, but all of the things needed for the species' survival - from sunlight and wind to food and shelter. The main reason that many species are endangered or threatened today is because people haveĬhanged the homes or habitats upon which these species depend. People can also cause the extinction of plants and animals. Newer species that could survive in a warmer environment took their places. ![]() For example, after the Ice Ages, when the glaciers melted and the earth became warmer, many species died because they could not live in a warmer climate. Other times, extinction will happen slowly as nature changes our world. Sometimes a natural event, like a volcano erupting, can kill an entire species. Species disappear because of changes to the earth that are caused either by nature or by the actions of people. Threatened species are plants and animals that are likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range. Endangered species are those plants and animals that have become so rare they are in danger of becoming extinct. There are over 1,300 endangered or threatened species in the United States today. At that time, there were no hunting laws to protect endangered species like there are now. Second, many pigeons were shot for sport and because they were good to eat. First, the forests where it lived were cut down to make way for farms and cities. The passenger pigeon became extinct for two reasons. All living passenger pigeons disappeared from the earth entirely. There were so many passenger pigeons that people often saw great flocks of them flying overhead containing thousands, even millions, of birds. The National Wildlife Federation is playing a leadership role in developing and promoting innovative approaches for climate-smart conservation that can safeguard endangered species and other wildlife in the face of a changing climate.A century ago, a bird called the passenger pigeon lived in North America. Climate change not only affects our plants and animals directly-through changes in temperature and precipitation for instance-but can worsen the impact on endangered species of traditional threats, such as invasive species, wildfires and diseases. National Wildlife Federation is advocating for passage of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, which is a bold new approach for providing the funding needed to carry out these proactive conservation plans.Ĭlimate change is making the protection of endangered species increasingly challenging. Toward that end, National Wildlife Federation works to maintain healthy populations of fish, wildlife, and plant species through promoting broad-based conservation efforts such as State Wildlife Action Plans. One of the best ways to protect endangered species is to prevent their decline and deterioration in the first place. ![]() Reducing threats to wildlife that can lead to their endangerment and extinction, such as loss of habitat, contamination of water and spread of invasive species.Protecting, restoring, and connecting the habitats on which endangered species and other wildlife depend for their survival, and encouraging wildlife-friendly land management practices.Advocating for increased funding for federal and state conservation programs that benefit endangered species. ![]()
